How to Buy a Hat Online...

By Claire Howeson, Designer & Founder

You love our hats, but you don't know where to start when it comes to buying a hat online...Let me talk you through it, it's actually really easy.
Once you've been through this guide, if you still have any questions at all about hat shapes, colours and sizing, please do not hesitate to contact us on 0203 397 9772 or email us at studio@penmayne.com.

1) Choose your shape

The Willow Fedora

This hat is a particularly elegant and versatile wide-brimmed fur felt fedora. It has a gently sloping downward brim and forms a lovely soft frame around the face. The felt has a velour finish which makes it beautifully soft to touch and lovely to wear and the brim has a folded edge (rather than a raw cut edge) which gives the hat a more classic, structured look. A perfect choice for both the avid hat-wearer and a first time buyer, this is our bestseller hands down.

Measurements: Brim width 8cms/ Crown height 12 cms

The Amber Trilby

This hat is a classic felt trilby; it is medium-brimmed with a stylish upturn at the back and tends to suit slightly smaller face shapes. The felt has a velour finish which makes it beautifully soft to touch and lovely to wear, and the brim has a folded edge (rather than a raw cut edge) which gives the hat a more classic, structured look. A good choice for those who know their hat shapes and are looking for something a bit different.

Measurements: Brim width 6 cms/ Crown height 11 cms

2) Choose your colour and trim

Now that you have chosen your shape, you can look at all of the available colours and designs for the hat.

There are a few colours that may need a bit more explaining:

Charcoal: This is our 'black.' It is nearly black but it is actually a very dark grey, which we think is much softer.
Midnight Blue: This is a beautiful deep blue that is dark enough to be worn with black, but also has a lightness to it that is really soft next to the face. This is our bestselling colour, hands down.
Mink: A gorgeous taupe colour that is soft and neutral and can be worn all year round. It's quite unusual to find a neutral colour that is this well balanced; it seems to be one of our secret gems.

If there is no colour that immediately cries out to you, I always think it's best to think about what colour your coats/ scarfs/ jumpers are, as ultimately these are what you will be wearing the hat with.
If there is a colour that you particularly like, I've grouped our collections into colour schemes so that you can see all of the hats available in that colour...

3) Choose your size

We have a really simple 4 – step guide to finding your hat size; all you need is a piece of string and a ruler:
1. Place a piece of string (or a tape measure) around the circumference of your head, slightly above the ears and above the eyebrow ridges (see diagram), ensuring that it is kept level and firm. If possible, ask someone else to check that it is in the correct position around the head. If you use a piece of string, simply measure the length against a ruler afterwards.

2. Repeat this a few times to ensure that you are taking an accurate measurement.
3. Use the following guide to work out which size you need.

    4. If you are in between sizes, we suggest that you choose the larger size. We will provide you with felt inserts which can be placed inside the headband to bring the size down a little. These are provided as standard with every order.
